Back when I was a kid, I would watch a show called the Magic School Bus. It was about an eccentric school teacher named Ms. Frizzle who would lead her third grade class on this magical school bus that could take them anywhere.
Arnold turns orange in one episode and the whole class goes on an adventure trying to solve why he is orange. I actually had a similar case with the Doctor.
A middle aged man came in complaining of his skin tone. When I first saw him I thought that he was experiencing jaundice and other liver problems. It was that pronounced.
Of course, his skin tone was not as dramatically orange as Arnold was in the picture above. After a long diagnosis with the patient, he just simply ate and took a lot of other stuff that made him become orange. On a daily basis, he ate as much as two bags of carrots, drank at least a gallon of orange juice, and at least half a bag of clementine oranges. He had originally been scared that it might be a liver issue or even cancer, and this "orange" condition even affected him personally, including his relationships and his job.
The remedy was for him to just simply stop. In a few weeks, when he came back for a followup, he was fine. And his color returned to normal.
It's just like what other people say...."doctors know best". It's always better to seek the help of professionals than to try anything untested especially if you are dealing with medical matters.
ReplyDeleteI remember getting up super early at 5:30am just to be able to watch The Magic School Bus. Your story reminds me of a book I read in 3rd grade called Freckle Juice. This kids drank pickle juice everyday because he thought it would make his freckles go away. People will try anything.
ReplyDeleteI watched this show very often growing up as well. So many shows, such as this one, now make me look back and think that there were some strange premises involved.

ReplyDeleteI wonder if the TV shoe Orange Is The new Black came from this idea. I hope not.

ReplyDeleteLike they say too much anything is bad for you. And that's even if you think what you're eating is good for you. But I never really knew that eating a lot of one color could cause such a condition. I guess that's why a balanced diet is important.
ReplyDeletehaha that's funny! But why would anyone want to eat sooo many carrots and drink so much juice? Probably the colour orange put his satiety centre (of the hypothalamus) to sleep.
ReplyDeleteIt goes to show you that in this case, the man overdid his consumption of things with orange coloring and it really changed his skin tone. The reference to the Magic School Bus reminded me of how much that cartoon teaches kids in a way that children understand best about real life sciences and things of this sort.
ReplyDeleteI remember watching that episode when I was a kid! Luckily I don't like carrots so I'll never have to worry about turning orange! Im glad that educational TV was able to help you in a real world situation!
ReplyDeleteI believe asking what the patient consumed as well as lifestyle habits contributed to figuring out what was wrong with him. Digging deeper into what caused symptoms is key to proper diagnosis.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very rare case. The doctors must really know the routine/habits of their patients first.
ReplyDeleteit is really interesting .unless you meet an expert you cannot come to a right conclusion in diagnosis.but is was shocking to know the skin colour was changed due to the consumption
